Barbados Free Press… Exposed?

While following the story of the Brittons Hill apartment cave in over at Barbados Underground, we noted comments from a poster going by the call sign of “Barbados Free Press Exposed” a one comment sounded as if it referred to a site. So after a quick check of Google, up comes “BarbadosFreePressExposed.wordpress.com

The site uses a similar layout to BFP (well actually the same layout) and they’ve nicked the graphic that BFP uses.

Now we’ve voiced our opinion of BFP quite loudly on this blog. See our earlier post : The Tragedy Of Barbados Free Press if you are in any doubt. And as a response to a blog like BFP it’s actually fairly slick, someone who googles BFP will automatically come up with BFPE at the same time. They can shadow BFP post for post if they like and present alternative opinions or facts if they catch BFP out on any particular issue.

We do think however that BFPE falls down in being as blatantly biased as it is. It will suffer from the same credibility problem as BFP. The other thing that BFPE will find is that simply saying that something is a lie is not going to convince many people (well maybe those who are already convinced) and that if they accuse BFP of lying when BFP isn’t, things will get very sticky very quickly for the newest blog on the blogoshpere.

That said, we think that the presence of BFPE has once again affirmed the growing importance of blogs to political and public discourse in Barbados, and because of that we have taken the decision to add them to our blogroll. Their comments will always be welcome in the margin once they maintain a general standard of decency that we expect from all of our commenters.

Welcome to the blogosphere BFPE, we hope that you can contribute something of value here.

  2. I think BFPE is a petty rampage, your original views on BFP seemed to be a very well thought out out approach – you may push here and pull there, but you are consistent, even the so far solitary comment at BFPE seems to be author-generated… rather sad, actually!

  3. Ian,
Time will judge BFPE, if it never rises above the hurling of invective at BFP then it won’t be much. If they focus on aggressively fact checking BFP then a couple of things will happen:

    1. BFP will self police better because of the increased scrutiny.
    2. BFP will aggressively search for genuine stories which in turn will (hopefully) keep the govt. on its toes.
    3. We will all be better off.

of course if it stays on the level of LIES,FILTHY DOGS etc. etc. etc. it will very quickly become a casualty.

I’m hoping that the former happens.

  4. I’m with Ian. I think that the fact that they have a problem with their CAPS LOCK key and have been established purely to discredit, rather than add to, the debate in Barbados means that they will lack credibility. I very much doubt that they will get beyond the sort of rantings I can see there at the moment but hope they do so – always good to have a genuine debate.

  7. BFPE seems to be making my point for me. An inability to write anything without using a combination of some or all of the following words: “dirty, shameless, animals, filthy, BFP” demonstrates a misunderstanding of how to attack BFP. Do it reasonably, with facts and you discredit them. Do it with this sort of rant and you make people like me read them more. Idiots.

  8. I hate to say it but so far BFPE just doesn’t seem to get it.

  9. i was just pointed here by someone from BFP, as i objected strongly to some of their posters’ biases and the general anti-government tone of them …i am disturbed by any media that only reports the bad or only the good. i do feel there is a place for fair and balanced blogs so i can keep apace of what is happening in my homeland. thank you, Marginal, for showing me that this is true.
BFP is actually a good site but some of the posters…WOW! talk about political axes to grind!
