Hugo Chavez – President For Life?

Filed under: Caribbean,Hugo Chavez,politicians,socialism,Venezuela — notesfromthemargin @ 11:14 am

Venezuela is taking yet another step in removing the democratic safeguards that should prevent a dictatorship from coming to power. If this story is correct Hugo Chavez is about to remove term limits on the office of Venezuelan Presidency.

National Assembly President Cilia Flores said Chavez will introduce legislation in the next few days to amend the 1999 constitution, which was instituted under him and allows the head of state to serve only two successive six-year terms.

“If a president has correctly led the country and the people are satisfied with the administration, we cannot take away the opportunity of re-electing that president,” Flores said.

Yes I’m sure every “I” will be dotted and every “T” will be crossed to ensure that the removal of these limits is legal and constitutionally correct, however I can’t help but be concerned. The chain of events in Venezuela is beginning to look more and more like what Mr. Chavez’s critics have always said would happen.

There’s a saying “If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck” well at this point I wouldn’t want to call the Chavez government a dictatorship, but it’s definitely beginning to develop a certain waddle and smell that are remarkably ducklike.

  3. Well the truth is that Venezuelan people live better than before, though you might think opposite.
The other thing is that they have right to be on theire own.
They don’t need any more imported and imperialistic “democracy” which is nothing but another
fake from the riches western countries. And it’s only to exploite Venezuelan Oil and
natural resources, but don’t give a real care about people.
    So Go Chavez.
Soon the world will be joined…
