Is St. Lucia being “unfair” to LIAT?

I came across this article with Barbados’ Minister of Tourism stating that St. Lucia was being unfair to LIAT by allowing American Eagle to service the SLU BGI route.

“He told Caribbean360 that in this age of regionalism, governments have to act as their brother’s keepers and it was disappointing that LIAT was not given the opportunity to see if it could adequately service the Castries to Barbados route.”

So what’s being said here? We weren’t doing our best to start with? We were only offering overpriced, irregular service because we thought we could get away with it?

While Barbados, Antigua and St. Vincent may choose to subsidise LIAT, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other viable options, I don’t think we should be “whining” about how unfair it is.

I do think that there is a real opportunity here for a high speed ferry between the islands, the first investor to crack that nut will laugh all the way to the bank.

  1. I totally agree with Senator Allan Chastanet.
LIAT first has to demonstrate they have a feasible BUSINESS PLAN to ensure viability and sustainability.
There current ratio of staff per operating aircraft ia 63.
Do they need all the local offices, when their website and travel agents could do the job?
And perhaps, most controversial of all, they have to move operations to Barbados, its the only logical hub.
