The Government of Barbados is asking for nominees for the Independence Honours List. For those of you who don’t know this is where people deserving of recognition are nominated.
I think that Rihanna fits the bill. Why?
Apart from being the most successful entertainer to come out of Barbados. She has given the island a level of visibility that they couldn’t pay for. She has held the Barbados flag high wherever she goes. She also has offered her services to the Barbados Tourism Authority completely free of cost.
Now don’t underestimate the value of this. When you get out into the wider world let’s face it many people have never heard of Barbados. If you’ve travelled you will have heard the comment: “Is it near/part of Jamaica???” these days they will know about it many times because of Rihanna. You can’t overestimate the value of that.
So how do we go about this. From the GIS (Government Information Service) website:
Nomination forms and pre-addressed envelopes are available from the Cabinet Office, Government Headquarters, as well as at all post offices, branch libraries and Cave Shepherd’s Information Desk, Broad Street.
Completed nomination forms must be submitted by Tuesday, July 31, 2007, to: The Secretary, National Honours and Decorations Advisory Council, The Cabinet Office, Government Headquarters, Bay Street, St. Michael, Barbados
Well if you aren’t in Barbados you can certainly write to the good Secretary at his or her snail mail address. In closing this post I’m going to ask the other Bajan Bloggers to support this worthy appeal.
How about it guys?
